Summary

In this stunning new book, Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of "outliers"--the best and the brightest, the most famous and the most successful。 He asks the question: what makes high-achievers different?

His answer is that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: that is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing。 Along the way he explains the secrets of software billionaires, what it takes to be a great soccer player, why Asians are good at math, and what made the Beatles the greatest rock band。

Brilliant and entertaining, Outliers is a landmark work that will simultaneously delight and illuminate。

Malcolm Gladwell’s work probes into the concept of if we create our own fates or if circumstance does that for us。 He uses several different perspectives to create a compelling argument supporting his opinion。 It’s very well written, but a little dry at times。

Fantastic book。 I listened to this on Audible which was read by Gladwell and included an interview at the end of the book。 Interesting and thought provoking。 Would highly recommend。

An interesting read, that offers some challenging viewpoints and requires a different mindset。 It took me a day to finish it, it reads easily and it’s full of thought-provoking stories。 While it mentions some famous names such as Bill Gates and the Beatles, the majority of the other mentioned people aren’t that famous or aren’t so often referred to in other books。 Gladwell’s theory is quite simple - becoming successful has more to do with your surroundings (environment, family, friends, opportun An interesting read, that offers some challenging viewpoints and requires a different mindset。 It took me a day to finish it, it reads easily and it’s full of thought-provoking stories。 While it mentions some famous names such as Bill Gates and the Beatles, the majority of the other mentioned people aren’t that famous or aren’t so often referred to in other books。 Gladwell’s theory is quite simple - becoming successful has more to do with your surroundings (environment, family, friends, opportunities, luck) rather than just with only yourself as an individual。 I definitely agree with that, but I’m not quite sure I needed a whole book to prove me what I already know。 He’s definitely done a lot of research and most of the stories were very interesting, his thoughts however felt a bit repetitive at times。All in all I enjoyed it, with 4/5 stars, I would recommend it to people who are curious about the topic of success and want to read some intriguing stories。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Decent insights on luck as a major factor in success for the so called outliers。 Sounds sound, but not convincing enough to make me believe luck alone would lead Bill Gates and his thousands of hours on a computer would lead to his success。

Life is more about luck than most people are willing to admit (myself included)。 This book was fascinating in that it explained how specific circumstances can predict how people will end up。

An excellent book explaining often overlooked aspects that help make successful people so successful。 As a teacher, I found this book fascinating。 In the last portion of the book, Gladwell discusses the possibility of year-round schools, shorter breaks, and increased rigor for students。

Malcom Gladwell's narrative style isn't my favourite, and I am well aware of his bias as a journalist and proclivity he has towards stretching anecdotal evidence into broad generalizationsWith that being said, this was a fascinating read。 The patterns he found to explain how outliers rise to the top is hard to challenge, and something that has been on my mind a lot as I grapple with my personal privilege and position, and what to do with it moving forward。My key takeaway from this book is that t Malcom Gladwell's narrative style isn't my favourite, and I am well aware of his bias as a journalist and proclivity he has towards stretching anecdotal evidence into broad generalizationsWith that being said, this was a fascinating read。 The patterns he found to explain how outliers rise to the top is hard to challenge, and something that has been on my mind a lot as I grapple with my personal privilege and position, and what to do with it moving forward。My key takeaway from this book is that talent, hard work, grit, and determination are all necessary to be successful, but that is only a part of the story。 The most successful individuals who are outliers and change-makers of society had all of the above, yet also had an enormous amount of luck in terms of when they were born, what era they grew up in, what opportunities for practice they were given, and their cultural legacy and personal upbringing。 There are truly a lucky few that are given an opportunity of a lifetime, and if you are someone who can capitalize that, then you will be a true outlier。 。。。more

Livro excepcional! This book has a good in depth studies about different people and their long standing habits which were behind their success。 Also, it points out some major rules that everyone of them followed to get success。 Go read this book if you like case studies。

Gladwell puts forth the idea that success is not an individual accomplishment but rather the result of circumstances, systems, support, opportunity, and often luck。 And he does it well!

Although the book has a good subject, I would expect the subject to be handled in a more clear and simple way。 I think it would be better to explain Gladwell's 10,000-hour rule more directly, without some unnecessary elaboration。 Although the book has a good subject, I would expect the subject to be handled in a more clear and simple way。 I think it would be better to explain Gladwell's 10,000-hour rule more directly, without some unnecessary elaboration。 。。。more

Is actually a 4。5 grade, but goodreads likes only round numbers。The essence “They are products of history and community, of opportunity and legacy。 Their success is not exceptional or mysterious。。。。The outlier in the end, is not an outlier at all。”

This book made me realize that there are no outliers at all。 Success is a product of history, community, opportunity, and legacy。 It made me look back of my family’s background and it really does make sense though a few may say that the data gathered are somehow selected to fit on his views but I am no expert nor do I have that leisure time to search about it。 The last two chapters of the book are personally touching to me。 I like that part when Gladwell says “Outliers are those who have been gi This book made me realize that there are no outliers at all。 Success is a product of history, community, opportunity, and legacy。 It made me look back of my family’s background and it really does make sense though a few may say that the data gathered are somehow selected to fit on his views but I am no expert nor do I have that leisure time to search about it。 The last two chapters of the book are personally touching to me。 I like that part when Gladwell says “Outliers are those who have been given opportunities - and who have had the strength and presence of mind to seize them。” Outliers do not spring naturally but rather they have worked on whatever chance they were given to。 Though I was not able to finish this in one sitting, I will surely look back on those chapters that struck me。 。。。more

Highly insightful book! Some of the things I learned:|| Roseto effect - community life is essential for healthy living|| Mathew effect - initial attention is important in starting a positive feedback loop|| 10,000 Hour Rule|| Genius is not enough - when and where you're born matters|| Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory - individualism, ambiguity-avoidance, power distance|| Cultural legacies matter for better or worse - be aware of that and try to transcend them?|| Perseverance can catch up to Highly insightful book! Gladwell makes a very enticing argument about the power of the underdog。 If one can get past the fact that he is not a prophet but rather a writer, an enjoyable set of examples of feel good triumphs over adverse odds is fast paced read。
